About the Opportunity

PWP is seeking a Volunteer HR Director to lead and strengthen the organization's human resources function.

This is an excellent opportunity for an HR professional who wants to use their expertise in a mission-driven nonprofit environment while gaining or expanding experience in HR leadership, organizational development, talent management, employee and volunteer relations, policy development, and workforce strategy .

The Volunteer HR Director will work closely with organizational leadership to establish effective HR systems, support team members, strengthen accountability, and help build a professional and engaging organizational culture.

This is an unpaid volunteer leadership position . No salary or monetary compensation is provided for this role until we gain funding to provide compensation.

What You'll Do

HR Leadership & Strategy

• Lead the organization's HR function and provide strategic HR guidance to leadership.
• Develop and improve HR processes, procedures, and systems.
• Partner with executive and leadership team members on workforce and organizational matters.
• Help establish consistent HR practices across departments and programs.
• Support organizational culture, employee engagement, and retention initiatives.

Recruitment & Talent Management

• Support recruitment for employees, volunteers, interns, and leadership positions.
• Review and develop job descriptions and volunteer opportunity postings.
• Assist with candidate screening, interviews, selection, and onboarding.
• Help develop talent pipelines for organizational staffing needs.
• Recommend strategies for attracting and retaining qualified team members.

Employee, Volunteer & Intern Relations

• Serve as an HR resource for employees, volunteers, and interns.
• Support managers and directors with employee and volunteer relations matters.
• Assist with workplace concerns, conflict resolution, coaching, and accountability.
• Promote professional communication and respectful workplace practices.
• Maintain confidentiality when handling personnel matters.

Performance Management

• Help develop and maintain performance management processes.
• Support supervisors with performance evaluations and coaching.
• Assist with performance improvement and corrective-action processes.
• Help establish clear expectations and measurable performance standards.

Policies & Compliance

• Review and recommend updates to HR policies and procedures.
• Assist with employee, volunteer, and internship handbooks.
• Help maintain HR practices consistent with applicable requirements.
• Monitor HR-related compliance considerations and recommend areas for review.
• Maintain appropriate HR documentation and records.

Training & Development

• Identify HR and professional development needs.
• Assist with employee, volunteer, intern, and leadership training.
• Support leadership development initiatives.
• Help develop training related to workplace conduct, communication, accountability, and organizational policies.

Organizational Development

• Help strengthen PWP's organizational structure and workforce practices.
• Support workforce planning and succession planning.
• Recommend improvements to communication, collaboration, and accountability.
• Identify HR-related operational gaps and recommend solutions.

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for an HR professional who is organized, dependable, strategic, people-focused, and passionate about nonprofit impact .

Required

• Professional experience in human resources or a related field.
• Strong understanding of HR principles and practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational and documentation skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
• Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
• Professional judgment and a high level of integrity.

Preferred

• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.
• HR leadership or management experience.
• Nonprofit experience.
• Experience managing volunteers or interns.
• Experience with employee relations and performance management.
• Experience developing HR policies, handbooks, or organizational procedures.

Time Commitment

We anticipate an average commitment of approximately ~10+ hours per week , although the actual workload may vary based on organizational needs, projects, and HR activity.

The role is primarily remote, with virtual meetings and collaboration conducted through PWP's organizational systems.

Important Volunteer Information

This is an unpaid volunteer position . Volunteers do not receive salary, wages, employee benefits, or guaranteed monetary compensation for their service.

The Volunteer HR Director will serve in a leadership capacity while remaining a volunteer and will be expected to follow PWP's policies, procedures, confidentiality requirements, and code of conduct.
